Physical activity is not only beneficial for bone development and muscle strengthening, but also for self-esteem and mood.
Children above 5 should be participating in at least 60 minutes of physical activity each day, ranging from moderate to vigorous levels.
Activity in children below this age should still be encouraged but there are no guidelines for an exact amount.
Avoiding excessive periods of sitting in all children is recommended as this will increase their risk of obesity.
As mentioned above, the more exercise a child takes part in, the greater their needs for energy and they will generally have higher appetite levels although this will vary.
